A modern team site connected with a Microsoft 365 group gives a combined experience of both features to the site/group members. Modernizing a classic site by connecting it to Microsoft 365 group
We can connect a classic site to Microsoft 365 group to modernize the site. Follow the below steps to convert your classic (team) site to a modern site.
- Go to your classic site in the SharePoint Online portal.
- Click the Gear Icon (Settings icon) on the top-right and select Connect to new Microsoft 365 Group.
- In the next window, you will see what will happen when you associate this team site to a new Microsoft 365 Group. Click on the Let’s get Started button to proceed.
- In the next step, you will be asked to update new group details such as Group name, Group email address, description, and Privacy settings. Click on Connect group button to associate the site with the new M365 group.
- Provide additional owners and members to add along with existing SharePoint site members. Finally, click on the Finish button.
- Now, you will see the new and modernized home page on your site. You can go to Site Assets > Site Pages, rename the existing home page (Home.aspx) to Home-Old.aspx, and rename the new page Home(1).aspx to Home.aspx.
